Using MeeGo as Enterprise Desktop

Session Summary:
MeeGo is known for its openness, mobility, streamlined UI as well as tightly-integrated social network tools. Somewhat not very well known is MeeGo team's effort of making it a great player for enterprise desktop, in an era when mobility is seen as a boost for office productivity and more and more people are shifting to cloud-based solutions. This session is based on first-hand practical experiences from the earliest adopters of MeeGo in the enterprise environment, and covers strategic considerations, such as the benefit of using MeeGo as enterprise desktops along with traditional workstation, laptop and handset, deployment consideration, as well as technical details of every aspect, such as running MeeGo with proprietary technologies, centralized authentication and management, collaborative tools, etc. The target audience is early adopters who want to open a new market of supporting MeeGo-based enterprise mobile products (this session is delivered by a MeeGo distribution team member).
Session Abstract:

Enterprise desktop computing is critical to all businesses. It handles all the important data that keeps the business running. Aside from all the buzz around MeeGo there's little known to the world about MeeGo team's effort targeting enterprise environment. Improving mobility can help to improve efficiency, and MeeGo has proved to be a very good base platform with high mobility. In today's world there are many different appliances for mobile enterprise computing and netbook has shown its own unmatched merits comparing with smaller handheld and larger laptop. This session focuses on using netbook running MeeGo as an ultra-mobile enterprise desktop. And we hope with the introduction of MeeGo phone late this year these designs can be easily ported to the new release.

This session covers the important aspects of enterprise desktop: connectivity, authentication, encryption and security, collaborative tools, centralized management, etc. And it covers both traditional C/S style structure and new cloud-based solutions.

This session begins with comparing MeeGo with other similar highly-mobile platforms. MeeGo is based on Linux therefore many existing Linux solutions can be reused, and it also faces the similar challenges that other Linux-based solutions faced when running within infrastructure based on proprietary technologies. MeeGo is the only mobile platform that accommodates powerful native programs, tightly integrated collaborative tools and social network, as well as state-of-the-art web browser for accessing cloud services. MeeGo's Myzone, panel-based UI and ConnMan is especially useful for improving user experiences of mobile enterprise desktops.

Following that there is brief introduction of MeeGo core technologies: authentication framework, application deployment methods, security and encryption, connectivity, etc., with the consideration of incorporation with existing corporate infrastructure.

Then there comes the most important part -- collaborative tools: email, IM, calendar, corporate address book, desktop sharing, file sharing, etc. MeeGo has incorporated the best technologies from both Linux and cloud world. And thanks for MeeGo's openness, we also explore the possibility of using alternative solutions besides built-in applications.

Last but not least is the management facilities such as corporate policy compliance monitor, centralized monitoring and management, backup, remote support, etc.

This session is to present both our progress in this field and to provoke collaboration in this not very well explored MeeGo usage model.
